On 1 February, CNMV celebrated the first-ever Antonio Moreno Espejo Journalism Award ceremony, created in memory of CNMV’s Director, who passed away on 30 January 2017.
CNMV’s Chairman, Sebastián Albella, insisted on the importance of media to promote transparency and investor’s protection, key objectives for CNMV, and gave an award to the authors of the winning journalistic works:
- Carlos de Fuenmayor for his article “El Euribor, a la aulas” (The Euribor, in the classroom) published on elindependiente.com, and
- Fernando Belinchón, Eduardo Loren García and Pablo M. Simón for their work “Así actúan los chiringuitos financieros: cómo evitar caer en sus tentáculos” ” (This is how boiler rooms operate: how to avoid falling into their trap), article published in Cinco Días.
The President of the Jury and CNMV commissioner, Beatriz Gloria Viana, underlined the double role of the award. “On the one hand, it implies recognition to rigorous and quality journalism, essential for CNMV. It is also a tribute to Antonio Moreno on the first anniversary of his death and allow us to show our affection to his family: you can be sure that the memory of Antonio and his way of doing things still remains present among us”.
Beatriz Viana also explained how the awarding process of this first edition has been developed, with a total of 112 articles submitted, of which 95 have been sent by its authors and 17 have been selected by CNMV’s Communications Office. Of these, 53 articles were published in print media and 59 in digital media. The jury was also composed by Ángel Martínez-Aldama, chairman of Inverco, Manuel Pardos Vicente, chairman of Adicae and Ignacio Santillán Fraile, CEO of FOGAIN.
On behalf of the winners, Carlos de Fuenmayor showed his gratitude for the Award, which he described as a “very timely initiative, which results in investor protection” and showed his interest in participating in future editions.
Another of the winners, Fernando Belinchón, dedicated the Award to the people who have suffered the tragedy of losing their savings to boiler room fraud. “In these hard times for journalism courage is more necessary than ever, it needs journalists who are willing to write articles that serve citizens honestly, and, of course, needs media that will support these journalists”, he declared.
Antonio Moreno’s widow, Gloria Martínez, thanked CNMV for creating this initiative. “My wish is that this award, apart from lasting, allows for the name of Antonio to be always associated with the values of training and teaching that he defended throughout his professional and personal life”, she said. .
CNMV’s Chairman closed the ceremony expressing his gratitude to all the attendees for their expressing their affection and tribute. Albella defined the works awarded as “very complementary” both for the issues addressed and the profile of their authors and the type of media used. “The combination is very appropriate and a magnificent start for this Award that we hope it will last for many years”.
“I am sure that Antonio, wherever he is, will be smiling, thinking that we are here gathered in his memory impressed by his convening power and very proud that his memory serves us to promote values such as transparency and investor protection”, stated Albella and encouraged works submissions for the second edition of the 2018 Antonio Moreno Espejo Award.
The event was attended by numerous personalities from the financial sector close to Antonio Moreno, relatives and friends. A large representation of CNMV staff was also present.
