The Association of Securities Markets Supervisors of Mediterranean countries, created in 2009 under the framework of the “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean”, recently met in Barcelona.
Said Association is made up of eleven securities market supervisors from the northern and southern points of the Mediterranean, and is a forum for its members to exchange experiences on the new challenges affecting securities markets.
The meeting, attended by the highest representatives of said supervisors, included two seminars on the fostering of local securities markets and the challenges arising from the incorporation of the OECD’s Principles of Corporate Governance. Serdar Çelik, OECD’s Head of Capital Markets and Financial Institutions, submitted his diagnosis of the structural problems and obstacles for the development of capital markets.
Also attending was the Chair of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association, Rym Ayadi, and the Managing Director of IEMed, Roger Albinyana, who presented the activities of both organisations in relation to cooperation and exchange between countries of the northern and southern Mediterranean.
Additionally, the incorporation of Malta’s Financial Services Authority as a member of the Association was agreed, electing, as established in the incorporation agreement, Vasiliki Lazarakou as the new Vice-Chair.
