Experts and representatives from public and private institutions gathered on June 30 to discuss the latest trends and perspectives on the prevention and detection of financial fraud during a course organised by the CNMV (Spanish National Securities Market Commission) in collaboration with the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) in Santander. The event was chaired by CNMV Vice-Chair, Paloma Marín Bona, who delivered the opening speech.
The meeting also served as a forum to discuss emerging challenges and reach potential solutions to prevent financial fraud in the short and medium term.
The evolution of financial fraud in Europe and Spain has shown an upward trend in recent years, with a significant increase in both attempted and successful cases. This trend indicates that such scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and frequent, requiring continuous updates to prevention and detection measures at all levels.
The course featured a speech by Carla Díaz Álvarez de Toledo, Director General of Treasury. In addition, three interactive roundtables were held, offering a space for sharing experiences and opinions.
- The first roundtable included high-profile participants from the Bank of Spain, AEB (Spanish Banking Association), FOGAIN (Investor Compensation Scheme), and the Spanish Notariat, addressing the main emerging risks related to financial fraud.
- The second roundtable featured representatives from the Spanish State Attorney General’s Office and the State Security Forces and Bodies, highlighting new digital criminal strategies and the importance of cooperation among institutions.
- The third roundtable featured representatives from Autocontrol, UTECA and Asufin to discuss the role of the media and advertising in the fight against financial fraud and how investors are facing this new reality.
The second part of the session focused on the more technological aspects of financial fraud and featured representatives from Google, Bit2Me and an AI expert.
The course was an opportunity to share knowledge, experiences, and perspectives on how to address this growing problem. It also provided a chance to connect with main participants and move forward together in fraud prevention.
This is the third consecutive year that the CNMV has actively collaborated with UIMP in organising this event.
